We are still in the big bang.

You know a lot of Physics has to do with how you look at things, and only a few things in Physics are able to surpass the speed of light. But there is actually one very specific thing that exceeds the speed of light, 73.3 ±2.5 kilometers per second per megaparsec. And that is the constant at which space is expanding.

So space is moving away from itself and it isn’t a thing up for debate, it has been proven multiple times. Our universe is expanding much like how a fabric will expand. Every single second the galaxies we have in our universe are moving further apart from each other. The only confusion is this moving apart from each other thing is not very uniform.

The farther away something is from the center of the universe, the faster it is moving away. Things that are extremely far are in fact moving away faster than the speed of light. Now the absolute speed limit that is speed of light , that number comes from theory of special relativity. In special relativity nothing can move faster than the speed of light. It’s a local law of Physics because of which in fact you can never see anything faster than light with your eyes.

But a galaxy that is completely on the outside of the Universe that is General relativity. And the way General Relativity works is that it talks about the fabric of the nature/universe itself. Now it is difficult to understand so let me try to simplify it for you. So think for a while you have a massive white canvas on the wall, and you are starring at it. You are just marveling at the grandness of the Canvas. Now imagine you take out a bottle of ink from your pocket and smash that bottle against the canvas. What’s going to start happening is because fabric is stretching, the ink will start spreading. The tentacles are going to come out and tentacles are going to keep curling and keep moving away from each other. And this event is a big bang.

So what just happened is you threw a bottle of ink and now that ink is spreading. The center is the area of maximum energy and the faster the ink spreads the faster it moves away from each other. And that is exactly why the galaxies are moving farther from each other, and moving faster as they get away from the center. So it is actually a misnomer to say that the big bang happened years and years ago, we are still in the big bang. Big bang is still happening. And when you are talking about the fabric of the space itself, when you are talking about big bang continuing to happen, that is general relativity. That is outside the purview of speed of light and that is why things are moving farther from each other.

And us staying in the milky way we are one of those small tendrils of curls that happens when the ink keeps moving outside. Which we see today with our telescopes is the visible universe, but there is a lot more. Just because we cannot see it because it is outside the purview of our vision it does not mean it does not exist. It is still expanding and it will continue to expand for a lot more years to come.
